Hidden Gem Offering Heavenly Comfort Food

Perched within the leafy embrace of Hampstead, The Buttery Cafe within Burgh House is the sort of place that promises—if not quite delivers—a sanctuary from the urban cacophony of London. Aimless wanderers, coffee aficionados, and anyone in need of a quiet (if crowded) corner will find themselves decidedly enchanted. As I walked in, I noticed the lovely respite where greenery dominates and the sounds of nature eclipse those relentless sirens you wish to escape. Gabriel, the beaming beacon behind the counter, delivered a flat white so perfectly frothed, it almost felt sacrilegious to sip. There's something rather therapeutic about enjoying a coffee amid the smell of baked cakes and the occasional ring of spoons clashing with saucers.

Yet, balancing on the line between charming and chaotic, The Buttery tries to juggle its two identities: comforting secluded haven during quieter times and bustling but still inviting café when the weekend warriors descend. The food, when consistent, speaks volumes of their steadfast commitment to quality ingredients, though the za'atar sweet potato salad nearly clocked my dental work during an unfortunate encounter. But then again, if you're a true Jane Austen romantic, perhaps you'll thrive amid bustly company and the risk of randomly undercooked starches. Efficiency and friendliness are virtues practiced widely amongst the staff; albeit, whichever God they pray for patience some days seems forgetful. When everything aligns, it’s as though the paths leading into this garden of earthly delights haven’t changed since 2011. Rest assured, should you drift through during a more serene hour, with fork poised over velvety eggs Benedict or nibbling on carrot cake apparently iced by yogurt—the hidden paradise reputation isn’t underserved. — Penelope Savory
