Nestled snugly in a rather unassuming corner of town, this little gem of a Chinese place serves up delights that can silence even the most cynical heart—or, at the very least, mine. I decided to pop by last week after hearing whispers of thick, dee-lish prawn toast and gloriously tender satay skewers gracing their menu. And by golly, they did not disappoint! The prawn toast was an architectural marvel; the skyscrapers of toast towers blanketed in a generous slathering of prawns leaving one utterly spellbound. Now pair that with a serving of ribs that melted so effortlessly, it felt indecent.

But before you get too carried away, it's worth noting that Gourmet House isn’t flawless. As with any spirited ride, there are some bumps along the way. Customer service reminded me a bit of a brisk autumn breeze—sometimes refreshing, sometimes unbearably chilling. There's a risk, as I found on the receiving end of a rather vocal phone exchange, delivered as if they were haggling over squash at a busy market stall. Yet, the draw of their tawny sweet and sour pork nestled amongst mounds of fluffy egg fried rice seems ever worth it. Yes, my fickle food comrades, prices feel heftier than in days of yore, but if proportions of punchy pad thai and beef sizzling its way through black bean sauce beckon, Gourmet maintains its rightful spot in one’s culinary diary.
