About this place
London Black: A Must-Drink Marvel!
Ah, Anspach & Hobday's Arch House — a landmark that stands unassumingly amidst the mosaic of Bermondsey’s beer wonderland. Tucked within its industrial arches, this taproom melds coziness with that raw, stainless-steel charm which London’s craft breweries have patented so well. Walking into the space is much like entering the living room of an old friend who also happens to brew their own, mind-bendingly good beer. With a dizzying array of taps on offer, the charming bar crew are not just facilitators of your patronage but guides who radiate a pride and wisdom befitting monks at an abbey (though they wield beer paddles, not prayer books). The unshakeable star here is the London Black, a porter worthy of bequeathing Guinness a runny nose on any given night. I found its velvety embrace complemented by flirtatious hints of chocolate and coffee—a flavour profile apparently adored by the cadre of loyal devotees who make this their weekly pilgrimage. It is nearly impossible not to rave about the spirited ambiance and amiably mischievous staff like Courtney and Christian, whose hospitality ensures no pore remains undrenched. Despite an Ikea-ish wobble in furniture and overworked crowd control on weekends that can daunt the uncommitted sipper, it is doubtful whether one crumpled barstool could dampen such genuine foamy-hearted exuberance. Here’s a toast to the beer miles walked and pint dreams savoured! — Penelope Savory
