Warm Charm and Delicious Roasts Await

A visit to The Lordship is like stumbling upon a hidden London treasure where traditions embrace modern sensibilities. Nestled in the heart of East Dulwich, this pub-restaurant hybrid seems to have found that sweet spot between convivial warmth and culinary aspiration—a beacon amidst a sea of sometimes soulless dining spots. Entering, one is met with an unpretentious decor of rustic charm, echoing that classic British pub feel while offering surprising bistro-quality dishes that suggest more than just the regular gastro fare. It's here that chefs aren't afraid to present oysters alongside butternut squash pies, beautifully marrying variety with tradition. Indeed, the talk of roast beef so tender it scarcely has to see the knife holds true in this space, setting The Lordship’s Sunday roast far above par.

Yet lest we get carried away, every rose has its thorn—or perhaps, in this case, a potato that would peek down its starchy nose at a vat of oil. And yes, while some might argue the latitude of new-spud-shot potatoes as roast compatriots, the sense of occasional slapdash preparation sits as a minor-tempered critique, much rebutted by the united spirits of strong yet gentle wine selections gleaming optimistically on standby. Service, though at times run off its feet, maintains an agreeable poise with servers polite enough to smile through both the labyrinthine wedding receptions citing perfection and the Sunday roast soirées leaving room for improvement on cauliflower accouterments. Here lies a favourite of frequenters far and wide—a stalwart anchor for meetings, birthdays, and "just because". Perhaps a bit tongue-in-cheek when admonished about closures for weddings, but then again: we do love a good ceremony done well. Overall, The Lordship epitomizes a lively balance, an endeavor for excellence buffered by the necessary humility to grow—an East Dulwich staple in our kaleidoscope of London nights. — Penelope Savory
