As I meandered past the bustling theatres of Drury Lane, lured by the whispers from BBC Radio 4 and the hopeful nostalgia attached to Jamie Oliver's chain demise, I found myself stepping through the striking entrance of his eponymous culinary establishment on Catherine Street. The grand entrance was befitting of its contemporary, expansive interior—vast enough, indeed, to lose oneself in the delightfully airy layout. The initial welcome paired with the visual delight set a stage for high expectations that were tantalizingly affirmed with attentive staff who, in their warm and professional demeanor, seemed determined to elevate the dining journey from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

Enveloped in the soothing hum of satisfied diners, the anticipation translated well onto the plate. Our stylized British classics, like the succulent “Trevor's Chicken,” spoke of thoughtful preparation, although some dishes took liberties with seasoning—for instance, a shockingly spirited prawn linguine which left my taste buds ablaze, perhaps confused between 'spicy' and 'flavorful.' Notably, a snow-capped array of croquettes was an unintentional Parmesan monologue rather than an ensemble., but—and this offers hope—all shortcomings were tempered by harmonious service undertones. While the setting whispered of intimate theatrics, akin to its neighboring playhouses, the attention to detail was sadly lacking in certain corners. Yet, despite these culinary hiccups, I departed nurtured by a warm, deft service, amidst promises of potential future flourish. Jamie’s place is wanting, yet vibrantly aspirant—a return visit might be inevitable if only to witness what culinary act two awaits. — Clarissa Cuisinier
