Cosy River Pub: Epic Roast, Warm Vibes

As I meandered toward The Royal Oak, nestled serenely by a murmuring riverside, I was instantly charmed by the pub’s allure. The warm welcome of the heated outdoor booths and the earthy scent wafting from inside beckoned a leisurely entrance. Inside, two crackling fireplaces cast flickering shadows over patrons who animatedly sampled locally brewed beers and an inventive menu boasting dishes worth lingering upon. My visit fell on a curry night, meaning each spoonful of the delicately spiced Rogan Josh swaddled my taste buds with a comforting glow. Meanwhile, an array of homey classics served alongside a gratifying lamb roast were culinary balms to chilly weather.

Chances are, you’ll encounter staff who exhibit a professionalism bolstered by warmth and genuine attentiveness. It is a familial atmosphere, where dietary needs are handled deftly—milk and egg allergies were apparently no undoing for my supper hosts whom I eavesdropped upon. Also noteworthy: rarely does good food, buoyed by ambient blues music and robust portions, surprise or overwhelm for its reasonable costs. Yet as charming as The Royal Oak can be, it bares its lows through strained episodes best left like wine to mature. An aloof landlord tends yet at this veritable convivial space, hinting at cracks within its otherwise polished visage. Nonetheless, for an experience that feeds the belly and warms the heart, one finds comfort in planning another visit—and daydreams wandering back to thumping ribs and river breezes. — Clarissa Cuisinier
