Historic Gallery Shines With Rare Masterpieces
My meanderings through the lovely enclave of West Dulwich recently led me to Dulwich Picture Gallery, a place that is simultaneously an oasis for art lovers and a small battleground for brunch enthusiasts. The gallery itself is small yet impressively curated, boasting an assemblage of works from European old masters like Rembrandt and Gainsborough, along with enticing special exhibitions such as the Japanese printmaking display by three Yoshida generations. Just navigating the splendidly hushed halls of this unassuming gem had me marveling at how the grandeur of art history stands so poised in such a petite residence.Yet, journeying to the accompanying café was a different venture—more a culinary labyrinth than a straightforward meal affair. As moaned about by several patrons, a cavalier £10.95 effort towards eggs benedict and toast often felt like imaginative presentations trailing behind real substance; let's be honest, salads shouldn't evoke envy from their more elite partners on toast. Service, a solemn ritual it would appear, went unnoticed as "tips" presumptively guided satisfaction more than any efficiently scrolling waiter. Nevertheless, amid the slightly irksome din of misplaced prices and compactness, some solace did arrive: steaming cups and indulgent conversations provided rest to tuckered-out promenades. So while the art feeds the soul well enough, just approach its culinary neighbor with appropriately low expectations—a picturesque recommendation curtailed only by its own shadow. — Penelope Savory
