Hop Back Brewery

The Sultan

South West London CAMRA pub of the year 2023

South West London CAMRA pub of the year 2017. On the outside a ‘roadhouse’ type public house, typical of the suburban pub style of the 1950s, the Sultan is, on the inside, one of South London’s hidden treasures.

Never judge a book by its cover. On the outside a 1930s roadhouse style pub, on the inside, one of South London’s hidden treasures.

An award winning pub with a warm, welcoming atmosphere created by Niall and his team. Serving a range of cask beer from Hop Back Brewery and regular guests as well as a range of lagers, ciders, wines and spirits all in a relaxing and vibrant environment.

  • Time Out Love London – Most loved bar or pub – 2018.
A remarkably intact early post-war pub that still retains its original two room layout.

The original Sultan was destroyed during WWII, the present replacement being built in the 1950s. All the indications are that it was always just two rooms – the public bar on the left and the saloon bar on the right.

The public bar on the left retains its original 1950s counter with the front now painted pink, and the original bar back of shelves on ply panelling with some mirrored panels. Around the small room is a dado of 1950s ribbed hardboard also painted pink and there are two small 1950s brick fireplaces.

The Sultan - Testimonials

Quality local. … inside it’s a proper drinking venue with a great selection of well kept beer. Owned by the Hop Back brewery from Salisbury – GFB is a personal favourite. Best of all, the price is very cheap – a pound lower than pubs a 10-minute walk away. Friendly staff. Free wifi. Superb pub.

The Sultan is a real favourite of mine, low prices, nice and basic , exceptionally clean and ale is all important. They now do a range of Guest ales and the forthcoming ones are on a board above the bar. The staff take trouble to ensure a full pint, I’m looking forward to that in the winter
