This Survivor Lens programme explores a perspective of 'return' – what it means to safely bring traumatic histories to the present through archive, performance, and observation. Andrea Luka Zimmerman utilise their personal and public archive to explore the details missed – the person(s) left behind – and bring them into the safety of the present. Julie-Yara Atz returns to Homs in Syria to witness how the landscape has shifted in the years since its traumatic envelopment, searching for the joy amidst the rubble. Julian Triandafyllou uses performance to revive a long-lost friend, central to their experience of abuse, and depicts a process of healing.

Hot on the heels of our fantastic last slam, we’re returning to blow your minds once again with an evening of incredible poetry!

Join us on 1st May upstairs at the Genesis Cinema in Stepney Green for your monthly dose of friendly, competitive spoken word.

No props or costumes (reading from paper or phone is absolutely fine)
No hate – we’re here to uplift and celebrate each other’s voices

The film details the lives of the Palestinian fishing community in the Gaza Strip, their daily suffering; facing attacks from the Israeli navy while they try to fish to make ends meet for their families. 
The film tells the story, through interviews which were conducted at Gaza port during the spring of 2022 and up to early October 2014,   of a number of Palestinian fishermen who either lost loved ones or ended up disabled by the Israeli navy fire or arrested for no reason in a very humiliating way.
 It also tells the story of Madleen, one of the few Palestinian fisher women in the Gaza Strip. 
The film was about to be premiered at the YMCA in Gaza on 07 October 2023!
 However, with the Israeli vicious and murderous onslaught, additions were  made to the film to show the forceful evacuation of the fishing community from the north to the south of the Gaza Strip and the suffering of the Palestinian people in general  under the Israeli genocidal attack.

The name "Shanshula" is a type of fishing net in the slang of local Palestinian fishermen.

The film is 36 minutes long. It was produced in cooperation between Sheffield Palestine solidarity campaign and a local media organisation which provides training for youngsters on journalism, called the Palestinian Vanguard Station; which was bombed and destroyed by Israeli F16's in Khan Younis in Jan 2024.

Director Xiaorui convinces his cast and crew to resume the shooting of a film halted ten years earlier. In January 2020, with the shoot almost complete, rumours regarding an illness begin to circulate. A hairdresser from Wuhan is sent home, while the crew follows the news on their phones. The director has to decide whether to halt the filming once again. Some of the crew and actors manage to leave before the hotel is locked down by security guards and everyone left on set is confined to their hotel rooms. As all communication is reduced to phone screens, Wuhan is locked down. The crew continues to communicate via video calls, whilst the quarantined main actor Jiang Cheng struggles to support his wife who is now locked-down with their month-old baby in Beijing.

The screening will be introduced by Yixiang Lin, Co-founder & Lead Curator of MINT Chinese Film Festival.

Björk’s Cornucopia is a documentary concert film by legendary Icelandic artist Björk, capturing her 2023 performance at Lisbon's Altice Arena during the four year long Cornucopia tour. Directed by Ísold Uggadóttir, the film integrates live footage with immersive visuals, and features songs from Björk's albums Fossora (2022), Utopia (2017) and Vulnicura (2015), presented through elaborate stage designs and multimedia elements. Subtitles for all lyrics appear on screen throughout, in Björk’s own handwriting.

Following a writer on his world famous fictional play about a grieving father who travels with his tech-obsessed family to small rural Asteroid City to compete in a junior stargazing event, only to have his world view disrupted forever.

Skala Eressos, Lesbos, has long been a mecca for queer women as they trace the steps of Sappho, the poetess who gave lesbianism its name. Residents hold a week-long festival in May celebrating the island's queer spaces and community, encouraging the younger generation to claim the space as their own. This short documentary follows the residents and visitors and those who are part of it - attendees, organisers and performers.

As the rain tears down on rippled metal roofs, the Cameroonian city of Douala is in the throes of preparation for the start of the new school year. The protagonist – the stoic, hardworking Mambar Pierette – is a dressmaker and as such becomes the local confidant, therapist and mother. Belgium-based director, Rosine Mbakam, uses her essayistic style to create a fictional tale of a woman facing a day of misfortune. In the francophone language Pierette is a 'couturier' but not in the way the Western world understands the term: she is sat hunched over a machine, runs her hands across fabric and slices through cloth whilst the rains threaten her livelihood and her relationships. Mbakam offers a glimpse into the lives of businesswomen working in the heart of their local communities where negotiations of time, money and expertise are complex and unregulated. From watching Pierette overcome every struggle, we begin to understand the real value of cloth.

Textile artist Allan Brown finds a way through grief by locally foraging for nettle, processing the fibres, hand-spinning and weaving them, and then cutting and sewing the coarse fabric into a dress. This seven-year project, poignantly documented through Dylan Howitt’s lens, enables Brown to find solace in the changing seasons, to slow down his mind through the repetitive and embodied nature of craftsmanship, and to ‘change something ugly and painful into something beautiful and protective.’ A labour of love, The Nettle Dress reminds us that a return to slow methods of production and reconnection to nature can be healing for both the planet and humans alike.

Heroic earthling Flash Gordon saves the world from the nefarious Ming the Merciless in this lavish, intentionally campy adaptation of the famous sci-fi comic strip. The story is as basic as space operas get: Ming (Max von Sydow) has developed a plan to destroy the Earth, and Flash (Sam J. Jones) and his attractive companion, Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), are called upon to stop him. Along the way, Flash must battle Ming's goons and the temptations of a luscious space princess. Previously the basis for a more straight-faced 1930s adventure serial, Flash's story is mined here for exaggerated, cartoon humor by screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr., a central figure in the similarly campy '60s Batman television series. The simplistic plot mainly serves as an excuse for spectacular sets and cartoonish action sequences, all set to an appropriately over-the-top rock score by Queen. Certainly not a film to turn to for serious excitement, fine performances, or character development, Flash Gordon has nevertheless developed an appreciative cult of fans who admire the film's humorous approach and the detailed, colorful production design.

After 27 years, the groundbreaking documentary 'Hang The DJ,' which first presented DJs as artists and debuted at TIFF in 1998, returns for a five-city UK charity screening tour. A very rare chance to experience this influential film on the big screen while supporting worthy causes.

In her captivating film, artist Alexandra Gulea knits together the life of her grandmother Maia (1905-1999) with the history of the Aromanians, a Balkan ethnic group subjected to displacement and cultural suppression during early 20th-century nationalist conflicts. Through a collage of carefully composed cinematic tableaux, archival footage, photographs, puppetry, drawings, and performative ‘re-incarnations,’ the film results in an extraordinarily layered portrait that is both deeply personal and historical. Dress emerges as one of Gulea’s central motifs. A red bridal gown with a five-meter train represents Maia's resistance to marriage customarily arranged by Aromanian women and translucent men's suits that move in the wind evoke the death by hanging of Gulea’s great-grandfather and other relatives. Elsewhere, an inherited velvet dress is seen drifting through the landscapes the Aromanians once traversed from the Black Sea to Bucharest. As Gulea notes: ‘The velvet dress is borne like a spectre. The landscapes in the film, in all their vastness and diversity, bear witness to Maia’s passage through these lands. Waters, mountains, trees – all have known her, all have absorbed her suffering.’

When Dani and Christian, an American couple in a strained relationship, travel with friends to observe some once-in-a-lifetime midsummer celebrations in Hälsingland, Sweden, they appear to enter a natural idyll. In the pagan rituals they witness, however, fertility and regeneration are connected to grisly deaths, as the meadow they inhabit becomes the site of a living nightmare. The handmade clothing worn by the Hårga community provides a whitewashed backdrop for a painterly décor of brightly coloured flowers which pulsate and seem to breathe, while humans are drained of liveliness, some more quickly than others. The contrast between encroaching human stasis and plant aliveness reaches its height when the May Queen is crowned and dons a costume of flowers. Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite era artwork of John Everett Millais and work by Belgian symbolist Léon Frédéric, the May Queen’s dress exudes a chilling vitality in which beauty and horror become one.
