Rolling into The Courtfield feels like donning a favourite old jumper - snug and freshly augmented to keep with the times. Situated almost theatrically across from Earl's Court station, it parades the stately charm of a traditional English pub while inviting in today's urbane crowd with an effervescent glow. The buzz hits you the instant you walk in, and it's almost impossible not to get chummy with Hadi, Samy, or any of the genuinely jovial crew floating about. While there's the odd misstep in service – yes, the whisky list could bolster its ranks – the overall atmosphere more than remedies this with charm and hustle.

My culinary adventure was one for the memory books, drenched in authenticity while being delightfully buoyed by modern whimsy. Indulging in the famed fish and chips baptized in golden batter might reveal the true gospel of crispy decadence, while the Steak & Ale Pie is practically sacrosanct, swimming in rich gravy that could make a Yorkshireman misty-eyed.
