Exceptional Sunday Roasts and Stellar Service

Setting foot into the eclectic warmth of The Tree House, Croydon, is akin to walking into a charming oasis that somehow feels refreshingly unexpected in this part of town. From the second you enter, the convivial hum hits you—a reminder that dining out is one of life's foremost pleasures meant to engage all senses. Yasmin greeted us with the warmth and attentiveness you'd hope to find but not always do; she knew her way around a Guiness as skillfully as any supposed Irish bartender on Paddy's Day and made every table she visited feel specially catered to. The setting itself does an excellent job of capturing a buoyant modern vibe—with tastefully understated decor enlivened by quirky elements like deer heads on the wall. For an enchanted evening replete with that ideal mix of rustic comfort and a touch of city sophistication, The Tree House leans more on the mark than off it.

While its roots might have lingering shadows from past brilliance, especially regarding some culinary chapters, the pub makes a marked recovery with its Sunday roast offerings—beef and pork just a tad shy of perfection and nut roasts surprisingly satisfying for a staple often seen as second fiddle. Divinely crisp from crust to potato, they’ll entice even the most hardened roast skeptics. And let's pull no punches: this place has also realized glorious heaven through its artful veggie pursuits—a rarity! While their seafood might wobble in the knees a bit and the odd dish needs rethinking (spinach ravioli masquerading as tomato soup, we're looking at you!)—the diligent staff and mood positively bolster these foibles. Top-notch drinks and the fact that dogs can tuck into their "dogg roast," almost make up for those minor culinary missteps all by themselves—a refined neighborhood bastion breathing life holistically rather than just filling bellies. — Milo Tastemaker
