It’s a place that aims to transport its patrons straight to Italy, both in spirit and palate, and for the most part, it succeeds marvelously. The diversity of options on the menu is a triumph: from wonderfully crispy margaritas perfect in their simplicity, to experimental concoctions like truffle bread paired improbably but deliciously with roasted beef. The Wicked Lisa pizza might not be crowding any “spiciest dish” competitions, but it’s personalized with attentive detail, thanks to a more than accommodating kitchen team.

Service at La Gioconda fosters a communal warmth that stands out refreshingly against the din of most metropolitan dining scenes. It's good to see there’s much love reciprocated by the staff; Rumi, Adelina, and Ivana seem to have perfected the ability to balance cheer with prompt table service. Even if some nights leave room for longing for a more generously portioned affair and timelier arrival of courses – as larger setups indeed could attest – the owners’ gracious gestures often sweeten compensations with offerings and extras that hit the mark within this cozy pocket in Crouch End. Add to that an occasional complimentary limoncello or an amiably infused story while dining alfresco under twinkling terrace lights, and you find yourself swept up in La Gioconda's effervescent embrace, easily compelling not just repeat business but genuine camaraderie. — Clarissa Cuisinier
