Perfection on a Plate, Hornchurch's Gem
Nestled snugly in the unassuming outskirts of Hornchurch, Riennas comes across as a small restaurant with grand ambitions – and golly does it deliver on those. Fresh from an existence of frequently being told “you simply must give it a try,” I capitulated, not without some dietary reservations, due to the enshrinement of steakhouse classics in its repertoire. Surprisingly, those bacon-wrapped morsels were divine, and my filet mignon was executed with the finesse of an artist armed with a sous vide and a charring iron. Indeed, the portions are mighty and the service – attuned to your high standards yet charmingly hospitable – demands as much credit as the chef’s perfectly tender pink lamb cutlets. The restaurant space itself, although not designed for intimate whispers, is perpetually alive with a convivial energy that could wake a sloth from slumber. Contributing to the merriment – apart from deals through French doors leading onto a characterful patio – are the staff whose quick-witted repartee totals a joy-filled outing. Follow an exquisite meal with an artfully crafted espresso martini, or maybe challenge the affable servers to whip up something impromptu and potent – you won’t be disappointed. For all the stability this culinary gem claims on its menu, maybe a twist of fate could jolt them into infusing novel and sector-bending delights down the line. Yet, to faults both major and imagined, you’ll hear naught in-house but faint protestations muffled by another shared slice of irresistible cheesecake heaven, rendering the whole experience impossibly amiable. — Penelope Savory
