Authentic Sri Lankan Delights Await Here
During my recent dalliance at Virundhu, nestled somewhere between a delightfully smug gastropub and a saree-draped cultural wonderland, I discovered a world of Sri Lankan cuisine that practically pirouettes on your taste buds. Brace yourself as this establishment frames a menu that rolls out dishes with enough heat to spark a small electrical fire, setting ablaze any prior misunderstanding of "spicy". Once you've deftly handled the torrent of intoxicating aromas, do sink your senses into the Kottu—the devilishly good stir-fried masterpiece that elegantly spins flavours faster than a Lankan tuk-tuk driver on a mission. Not only was this dish a culinary waltz, but it left me pondering how much rearranging of spice cabinets at home might be needed to slightly replicate it. The staff, managing to dodge pandemonium in what could have easily turned into an eatery Bollywood scene, guided us through this culinary saga with smiles audible enough to silence any sizzle and pop of their immaculate kitchen. What struck me as both a marvel and sweet abandon of reason was their penchant for portions, as they liberally dole out mountains of Mutton Rolls with all the grace of a Black Friday sale—enough to get hesitant diners considering whether they'd mistakenly joined some culinary sitcom about serving sizes. Though doubtlessly full, we gamely trooped into courses post-starter as every dish onwards felt like its own skillful diversion—a testament to their unrepentant joy in cooking. Desserts made rosy promises of future riches, charm hanging there like honey-soaked strands of history, gently coaxing the soul back to slim attire tomorrow. Furthermore, navigating through this haven in gastronomical Eastcote offers pockets of synchronous conversation, magnified by ambiance that declares itself subtly, allowing intent focus on voluminous taste, rather than constant chatter or chorus. Overall, Virundhu doesn't attempt to lushly court culinary history; it unapologetically allows you a warm-hearted cannibalization of classic and contemporary— and it triumphs immensely. — Penelope Savory
