Exceptional Service Awaits at Wembley Eatery

My recent jaunt to the Wembley outpost of Zizzi could well be described as a delightful venture into culinary theatre that’s neither outrageously ambitious nor tragically mundane. Perched on the second floor amidst the gleaming commercial chaos of the Designer Outlet Centre, Zizzi is that reassuring oasis where weary shoppers refuel before heading back out into the retail wilderness. The joint manages to deliver consistent Italian favourites, without the sort of mathematical formulas which so ruin the experience in many chain restaurants. It’s an advantage they exploit so insidiously well; offering hearty pizzas with a faintly adventurous edge, like the rustica Sofia, whispered in hushed tones amongst aficionados of dough and cheese creations.

Yet, it’s not merely the lashings of pepperoni or the wafting essence of basil leaves that had me sold. Of note is the staff ensemble which, unlike a band hastily thrust together on fees night, performed with the kind of cohesion likely to baffle even the most scrutinising Michelin inspector. Honorable mentions go to Anita and Vaidehi, whose warmth could honestly cut through the chilli-induced sweats brought on by the spicy chicken number I ordered. These angelic spectres flitted tirelessly between tables, and if a cock-up transpired, you would hardly notice through their expert social dance. Zizzi Wembley veritably provides the sort of upscale but rooted dining table melodrama Standard Directories are made of. Of course, for every Katalin who elevates your earthly eating pursuits, you’ll probable encounter the sort who mixed up the parmesan requests – a sprinkle here, there, gone everywhere – but that’s part of the forgotten charm that keeps us coming back. — Penelope Savory
